Labvanced.com released a big eye tracking update
Now you can have a static sampling rate of 30 Hz and also have no impact of the eye tracker to the main experiment performance/ accuracy, which was a major drawback in the previous version. In fact, we are now optimistic to include (maybe later this year) even a 60 Hz sampling rate option for setups with 60 Hz webcams, which become more and more common these days!
How can you test / activate this?:
You go to study settings and on the eye tracking section you will see a new option called "calculation mode", simply put this to "high sampling":
Without wanting to be too technical here, the main achievement is that everything works now in parallel threads, hence is not blocking the experiment execution / precision (which was a problem before) and thereby everything is much faster. A good analogy is that we go from a single congested traffic lane to a multi-lane highway, so things that can run faster are allowed to do so. A small caveat is that this works slightly better in Chromium based browsers (Chrome, Edge, Opera) as in Safari or Firefox, as the browser engines / APIs differ here (parallel computations directly on the graphics card are faster in Chromium browsers than in Firefox or Safari). However a static 30 Hz sampling should still be achieved by all major browsers in most cases. We will write more technical details in our new documentation page (https://www.labvanced.com/docs/ ) and our new blog (https://www.labvanced.com/docs/blog/) in the next few days.
Of course, some further important updates are still in development, i.e. an optimised fixation detection algorithm for our eye tracking data. In fact, this will directly be available in the app soon, so you don't have to go through the tedious process of mapping raw gaze data to more meaningful fixation data. In other words, you will be able to directly get relevant AoI metrics such as "time to first fixation", "fixation duration", "number of fixations" and possibly even some heat-map calculations for AoIS. So this will be an additional exciting option we will include in the next couple of weeks.
We hope this information is relevant for you and we wish you have a good day,
